GTL Recently Upgraded by Weiss Ratings:

We are pleased to report that Guarantee Trust Life Insurance Company has recently had its rating upgraded by Weiss Ratings, a company who issues financial strength ratings on more than 11,000 financial institutions, including banks, savings and loans, life and annuity insurers, health insurers, and property and casualty insurers.

GTL’s Weiss Rating was recently upgraded from B- to B (Good).

According to Weiss, B rated companies offer good financial security and have the resources to deal with a variety of adverse economic conditions. B rated companies comfortably exceed the minimum levels for all of our rating criteria, and are likely to remain healthy for the near future.

Rewrites/Reinstatement Procedures

We would like to remind you about the procedures that are followed when a policy lapses. The following parameters will be enforced when an application is reinstated or rewritten due to a lapsed policy:

1. If a policy has been lapsed for less than 6 months, the balance of first year or renewal commissions will be paid as earned.

2. If a policy has been lapsed for 6 to 12 months, the first year commissions will be paid as earned.

3. If a policyholder lapses a policy and the same agent/agency submits an application for a different product on the same policyholder within 12 months, first year commissions will be paid as earned.

Revised EFT Form

Please note that the Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) form required by GTL for contracting has been revised to accommodate those agents who have set up an agency as a “DBA” (Doing Business As). The state Insurance Departments require agencies to be licensed if commissions are to be paid to that entity. If the agency is a seperate legal entity and has a FEIN number, it is required to maintain an agency license. The only exception to this rule is if the agency is a “DBA”, in which case the agent must complete the revised EFT form attesting that the agency is a “DBA” and forward that along with a voided check for the agency to GTL. All income is recorded under the agent’s individual name and social security number.

Changes in Illinois Civil Union Law:

As of June 1, 2011 Public Act 96-1513, the “Civil Union Law”, took effect and requires that civil unions be recognized under the law for contractual purposes.

Illinois law now allows same sex and heterosexual couples to enter into civil unions, thereby granting them the same status under the law as married spouses. As pertains to the insurance coverage for which you are applying, please be aware that a party to a civil union is hereby understood to be included in any definition or use of the terms: “spouse”, “family”, “immediate family”, “dependent”, and “next of kin”. To the extent the applied for coverage allows for coverage of a spouse, the right to apply for coverage is extended to a civil union partner.

When was the last time a federal law (already enacted and in place for almost a year) needed a dedicated team of lobbyists and its own office in Washington to help convince the public that it really wasn’t as bad as everyone said?  Welcome to Obamacare’s latest effort to garner public support.

There’s an interesting article in the liberal-leaning Washington Post about a coalition of unions and other pro-Obamacare organizations which has hired three of the country’s top Democratic strategists to “defend” the health care reform law.  They’ll be assembling a staff and opening an office in the District in an attempt to sway public opinion in advance of the 2012 elections.

It’s obvious that after being trounced in the 2010 election cycle, Democrats are trying to stave off another blood bath as sentiment about Obamacare remains largely unchanged since its passage.

This past Monday, 21 Republican governors sent a letter to Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius, asking for changes to the requirements and scope of health insurance exchanges under Obamacare, and expressing “grave concerns” about the law.   Ostensibly, the letter asks for changes to the law, specifically as it applies to the state-run exchanges due to come online in 2014, and consideration for states’ concerns, however, these same states (with the exception of Tennessee) are part of the group of 27 states suing the administration over the constitutionality of Obamacare.

I think you’re safe in assuming the governors would rather depend on their lawsuit than the largesse of the Secretary, as evidenced by the last sentence of the letter: “While we hope for your endorsement, if you do not agree, we will move forward with our own efforts regardless and HHS should begin making plans to run exchanges under its own auspices.”

The Republican governors of Virginia and North Dakota sent separate, but similar, letters and Indiana’s Republican governor, Mitch Daniels, held a press conference on the issue and published an op-ed in Monday’s edition of the Wall Street Journal.
